How modern ergonomics is improving wellness, creativity and productivity at work.

Office workers' physical well-being is at risk unless we make major changes to our remote workstations.

The widespread and rapid adoption of the hybrid working model — a blended model where some employees return to the workplace and others continue to work from home — has lead to an increase in the number of hours we are infront of our workstations. While some organisations were well prepared for the sudden shift to remote working in 2020, others sent their teams home with poor workstation solutions.

"Heavy computer users perform 3 million key strokes and move their mouse 27km each year."

For some organisations, providing a safe workstation wasn't an option. In 2020, Australia faced a shortage of laptops and peripherals (mice, keyboards, headsets and monitors) and massive shipping delays when attempting to send devices to remote employees. However, other organisations simply chose to send staff home with only a laptop and charger.

Safework Australia found that an incorrectly setup workstation "can create poor postures leading to musculoskeletal
injury and eye strain". In addition, "the length of time that you sit in these postures also adds to the risk for injury and health problems".

For heavy computer users, the risks of poor ergonomic workstations were amplified. Some heavy computer users perform 3 million key strokes and move their mouse 27 kilometres each year.

In this episode of The Anywhere Operations Podcast, Logitech's Stephen Harding joins us to discuss how modern ergonomics has evolved and the strategies organisations can use to create safe workstations for employees, wherever they are.
